Another Quake in SoCal

If you live in Southern California then you are aware that we had, yet another earthquake today… a 5.6 centered East of San Diego. Last month we had another in Malibu, a 3.9. It follows a trend that we’ve seen lately….on 3/14, we had a 4.6 near Malibu….and another 4.1 on 3/9.
2024 was the most active year of shaking in the Southland in over a half century, with 15 seismic sequences with at least one magnitude 4 or greater earthquake. The largest of which were a 4.7 in both September and Feb.
Scientists have spent decades trying to piece together some sort of pattern that leads them to be able to predict the next large earthquake, but there has been no success on that front. Current common knowledge will tell you that these current quakes or clusters of quakes provide no details on whether we should expect something larger. I’ve heard some people say that these small quakes could be beneficial, as they may relieve pressure along a fault system. However, the USGS site says that’s just fiction. They state that “there are never enough small quakes to truly eliminate the occasional large event.”
As of now, there is still no way of predicting earthquakes or their likelihood. I did, however, get an Earthquake alert, along with everyone in the restaurant that I was sitting at just second before we felt it shake. Maybe that's progress.
So stay vigilant and make sure that you and your family are prepared with enough food and water so when a larger event hits, you’ll be prepared. If you don’t have a plan, make a plan. Click on the link below if you need help planning.
